David Leo Milligan
1931 - 2016


Decatur, Illinois – David Leo (Dave) Milligan, 85, passed away peacefully at Decatur Memorial Hospital while
surrounded by family on April 21, 2016.  He was born in January of 1931, the son of Chester and Zilpah
Milligan.  He married Evelyn of Newcastle, Pennsylvania, in June of 1951.  Dave and Evelyn met through
Riverside Baptist Church, made their home and raised their family in Decatur where Evelyn still resides.

Dave attended Decatur High School, graduating in 1948.  He was a Korean War veteran, having joined the
Army In 1952, and served with the 8th Infantry Regiment as a Corporal stationed in Friedberg, Germany.

Prior to serving his country, Dave had followed in his own father’s footsteps learning the art of carpentry and
woodworking.  He resumed a career in home building following completion of his time in the service, and was
a master carpenter who left a legacy of well-built homes and businesses throughout Decatur.  The legacy
encompassed not only his craft, but the privilege of working alongside his sons, John and Jim, through much
of his career, and passing along the art and love of carpentry and woodworking to multiple generations of

Dave was a man who loved dry humor and wit.  He was also a man of faith who loved his family, friends and
his Savior.  He served many years as a church deacon and trustee.  As a member of Antioch Christian
Church in Decatur, Dave came out of retirement and supervised the building of their current facility.  Through
the years he personally designed, built and installed many of the furnishings found throughout the church

Dave leaves his wife, Evelyn, of sixty-four years; children – John (Carol) Milligan of Decatur; Susan (Russell)
Cook of Hudson, Massachusetts; Lori (Tim) Owens of Kirkland, Washington; and James (Dianne) Milligan,
also of Decatur; grandchildren – Leslie (Brian) Johnson; Beth (Adam) Bruntjen; Joshua (Amanda, better
known to Dave as Abigail) Milligan; and Jessica Milligan, all of Decatur; Jodi (Chris) Reeve of Hendersonville,
Tennessee; Zechariah (Juliana) Cook of Boston, Massachusetts; Anna (Max) Luna of Moses Lake,
Washington; and Jamie Cook of Boston, Massachusetts; eleven great-grandchildren; niece, Char (Jim)
Hutchison of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; and sister-in-law, Chris Milligan of Decatur. He was preceded in
death by his parents, grandparents and brother, William Max Milligan.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 pm., followed immediately by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Antioch Christian Church, 5409 US-36, Decatur, IL  62521.  Tanzyus Logan
Funeral Services and Care are assisting with the arrangements.
